Overview
When a Sakura Tissue-Tek VIP 5 displays Error 22 and Error 23, reagent flow has been blocked or slowed enough to trigger a timeout. This issue frequently occurs on systems that have not had preventative maintenance within the last 12 months, and it is commonly related to degraded rotary valve O-rings.
At Rankin Services, we repair VIP processors daily. Replacing these seals restores normal reagent draw and discharge without major component replacement.
Common Symptoms
- Error 22: Reagent not filling in time
- Error 23: Reagent not draining in time
- Slow reagent movement
- Inconsistent reagent volume in retort
- Stalled processing cycle or aborted run
Most Likely Cause
Degraded rotary valve O-rings
The rotary valve seals direct reagent between containers and the retort. Over time — and especially with formalin exposure in Reagent 1 & 2 positions — the internal O-rings swell, crack, break down chemically, and block the valve ports.
When the O-rings fail, fluid cannot pass freely, causing draw and discharge timeouts and resulting in Error 22 & Error 23.
Factors accelerating failure include:
- High-use labs
- Long exposure to formalin
- Incorrect O-ring material
- Lack of annual PM cycle
How to Diagnose
Safety Note: Ensure proper PPE when handling formalin and reagents.
- Verify Error 22/23 on display
- Check reagent draw & discharge times (should be around 3 minutes for a healthy system)
- Remove rotary valve assembly
- Inspect internal O-rings for:
- Swelling or bloating
- Cracking / softness / sticky residue
- Blocked center port or reagent ports
If any seal shows deformation, replace all rotary valve and gate valve O-rings.
Recommended Repair
Replace both rotary valve and gate valve O-rings
Steps:
- Disassemble both valve assemblies
- Remove degraded O-rings and inspect ports
- Clean and flush reagent pathways
- Install chemical-resistant OEM-equivalent seal
- Lubricate with Sakura-approved ceramic-based lubricant
- Reassemble and test reagent draw & discharge sequences
Replacing only one valve can lead to recurring errors, since reagent demand cycles can stress both assemblies equally.
Parts Required (OEM-Equivalent)
| Component | Notes |
| VIP 5 Rotary & Gate Valve O-Rings | Same O-ring part number used in both valves |
| VIP 5 Preventative Maintenance Kit | Full annual PM parts & seals |
| Rotary Valve Grease | Required ceramic-based lubricant for valve rebuild |

VIP 5 Preventative Maintenance Kit
Repair Time & Skill Level
- Up to 4 hours
- Advanced service skill and previous experience required
Rankin Services offers PM kit installation and emergency onsite repair.
Preventative Tip
- Perform preventative maintenance at least annually
- Always use correct O-rings
- Replace seals preventatively before swelling occurs
- Watch for early warning signs:
- Error 22 and/or 23
- Slower reagent movement
- Fill or Drain timeouts
Proactive PM prevents downtime and protects the rotary valve assembly.
