Many Leica RM2255 Automated Microtomes eventually develop an intermittent beeping issue, often sounding like the end of travel alert even when the specimen head is not fully extended or retracted. The LED lights on the course advance and course retract may also flash with the beeping. This false alarm interrupts workflow and can cause unnecessary downtime in the lab.
The good news is that this is a known aging issue and is fully repairable during a standard Rankin Services field service visit.
Why the Intermittent Beeping Occurs
The RM2255 uses optical sensors along with a wiring harness to monitor head and barrel travel. The W8 (X8) cable, sometimes referred to as the position or limit sensing cable, connects these sensors to the control board.
During use, this cable flexes repeatedly as the head travels. Over years of sectioning cycles, the internal conductors inside the W8 cable can fatigue and break. Once this happens, the control system loses a clean signal from the position sensors. This results in:
- False end-of-travel beeping
- Beeping that clears temporarily when the head moves
- Occasional hesitation in motion
- Random alarm tones during normal use
As the internal conductors continue to weaken, the alarm becomes more frequent.
Correct Repair: Replace the W8 (X8) Cable
Because the failure originates inside the conductor strands, patching or splicing does not provide a reliable fix. The proper solution is to replace the W8 cable and verify proper sensor function.
Rankin Services field technicians perform this repair routinely and can complete it on site, followed by operational testing to confirm smooth and quiet performance.
If you prefer to order the part directly, you can purchase the W8 (X8) cable from Rankin Biomedical.
Signs You May Need Service
You may need this repair if you notice:
- Intermittent beeping with no over-extension
- Alerts that come and go as the head moves
- Sudden beeping during normal cutting
- Specimen head pausing briefly during travel
Preventative replacement prevents work disruption and maintains instrument reliability.
