Leica CM3050 S Cryostat – Red Stop Light On and Control Panel Unresponsive

When the red stop light on a Leica CM3050 S Cryostat stays on, the control panel becomes unresponsive. Many users assume the emergency stop switch is broken. However, one of the most common causes has nothing to do with the switch itself. Instead, the issue often comes from a missing or unplugged component on the side of the cryostat.

Why the Red Stop Light Stays On

The Leica CM3050 S uses a safety interlock system that checks whether the footswitch circuit is connected. If your cryostat does not have a footswitch installed, Leica includes a dummy plug to complete the circuit. Without this plug, the cryostat believes the footswitch is missing. This triggers a protective stop condition and keeps the red stop light illuminated, even when the emergency stop button is not engaged.

What the Dummy Plug Does

The dummy plug is a 15 pin male D sub connector that inserts into the footswitch port located on the right side of the cryostat, near the power breaker. It completes the control circuit and allows the cryostat to operate safely when you do not have a footswitch connected.

If this plug is missing, unplugged, or damaged, the cryostat will not reset and the panel will remain locked.

How This Issue Was Resolved

In this case, the customer did not realize the cryostat required a dummy plug when a footswitch is not present. Once they located the dummy plug and inserted it into the footswitch port, the following steps restored normal operation:

  1. Powered the cryostat down
  2. Verified that the emergency stop button was not engaged
  3. Powered the cryostat back on

After that restart, the red stop light cleared and the control panel worked normally.

How to Fix This On Your CM3050 S

If your cryostat shows a constant red stop light or the panel will not accept input, check the following:

  • Confirm the emergency stop button is fully disengaged
  • Inspect the right side of the cryostat for the footswitch connector
  • Ensure you have either a working footswitch or the dummy plug installed
  • Power cycle the cryostat after installing the plug

If the dummy plug is missing or damaged, replacement may be needed.
